#1589 new new feature

Finish "last comments" implementation

Reported by: planetcruiser Owned by: planetcruiser
Priority: major Milestone: In Discussion
Component: BW Profile Keywords:
Cc: pablobd

Description (last modified by planetcruiser)

Intro:

Task:

  • Feature should be made easily accessible to all members
  • Privacy needs to be respected

Solution:

  1. Link feature from a prominent location, options:
    • Personal homepage (after login)
    • Main menu, possibly under "Explore"
  2. Add checkbox to add comment page: "Show in latest comments" (with note about preference below)
  3. Allow members to set preference for checkbox

Concerns:

  • Comments in stream are out of context
  • Possible invasion of privacy
  • Negative comments on last comments page might influence honesty

A duplicate (#1831) with links to a forum discussion was opened. Closing this one as it anyway never got too much attention.

All comments are visible to all members, I don't see how a privacy issue can arrive, I don't think lack of context is a privacy issue (and can be solved with a link to the profile to see it in context). But maybe we can think on some compromise, what about anonymizing it? like keeping the comment but not linking to a concrete profile? but then this will weaken the aspect to show real life interaction is happening. Opting out would be possible too, but we cannot be adding an opt-out for every new feature, or can we?

We had a strong discussion when someone copied a comment from a profile into the forum. The argument that all profiles are visible to all members obviously wasn't the agreed base for the perceived publicity of the comment. Better not open that Pandora's box.

Pablo, this is a privacy problem. The problem here is aggregation and dissemination. While you do share information publicly you only do so in a certain context. To take this information and aggregate it into a much larger context, is a privacy invasion. If you want to have a more detailed explanation, read Daniel Solove's "A Taxonomy of Privacy" (http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=667622 ). He actually examines in detail what consitutes and violates privacy and why.

I think we can add an opt-out for every feature, including this one. The philosophy of BW (as i understood) is that we should give to every user the ability to choose, as it happened already with "my visitors" feature.

I suggest a default opt-in (like all available features), so that people can see the last comments of others when they log in, and have their own comments posted there too.

If somebody opts out, he will no longer have his comments going to the main page, and he will not see other peoples comments on the main page either.

i like this approach. all features on by default and let users opt-out if they object. maybe along with a sort of pop-up telling them about potential privacy concerns after they signed up - or after we activated a new feature.

if features are opt-in we will never get any fun usage out of them. :)
