#1767 new improve feature

group member settings

Description (last modified by sitatara)

Currently the only options right now for group member settings are "I want to receive Email updates from this group:" -No -Yes

I think this should be replaced by: "Email notifications will include" -individual message -daily digest -important messages only

important messages should be chosen by the founder. There cannot be "no" choice. If somebody is not interested, he can leave the group.

  • Priority changed from major to critical
  • Type changed from unknown to improve feature

Also we should not get email of our own notifications at all.

I change it to critical, because the 2 current options are no mail at all or 20 annoying mails per day. Most users will choose the first one, which leads to unactive groups.

Also, if somebody edits or translate his post, there should be no notification.

As long as there ia an option of "no communication", an event cannot be made. It looks like most users set to "no communication" because they dont want their mailbox filled with useless messages, so everytime an event is posted, nobody goes.

@beatnickgr: Do you really expect that people that set no communication would be pleased if they get meeting invitations?

From a support ticket: "In my view it should really be easy to enable groups send weekly digests of the latest comments. I don't like to end up with dozens of e-mails when I could just get one long one after the discussion has had some developments."

Therefore, it would be good to add "weekly digests" to the notification options.

There is also a support ticket where someone complains about getting his own posts by e-mail:

"I don't need to get a mail about the thread i just opened up.. :P

Please turn that off.

IF [user startet a topic]

THEN [this user must not get a mail about that]

THX! :)"

Personally, I totally agree with the idea not to get notifications for edits (the amount of edits is sometimes ridiculous and I really don't want 10 notifications for just one post).

But I absolutely disagree with the idea to have no "no e-mail notifictaion" option. Of course, every member should be allowed to choose if he/she wants e-mail notifications or not.

After discussing in the volunteer cafe, we all agreed that it's an emergency to make daily/weekly digests. My initial idea of stoping "no notification" has been rejected.

From a support ticket: "Is there a possibility of creating an Instant Update, Instant Reply, Weekly Digest function for the groups? Right now it's an "all or nothing" kind of scenario, and getting so many e-mails in one's inbox can be a bit off-putting. People are more likely to turn off the notifications altogether if they're going to receive an e-mail for every single post in a city group."

I agree and think this is a major issue for local volunteers. They want members to get e-mail notifications but the instant notifications can really be a bit over the top if there is some reasonable amount of activity in a group (and even more so if a members wants to follow several groups).
