What do we want to solve with this?

If it is about people not being found in the neighborhood of a city that should be fixed with a smarter search.

If it is about freedom of choice: Well, we would need to distinguish the people which have chosen their location freely from the other. If many people choose to move that increases pressure on the people that don't want to reveal their real position. Which I'd say is bad.

You don't have to reveal your location, you could choose nearest metro or train station, or the market square.

The current system is misleading, at least we should add a disclaimer stating position in the map is random.

I agree that the current system is misleading. Therefore I already suggested on the dev mailing list to only add three markers (or less if there are no results for a particular accommodation type) to the place.

If you search in a distance of say 20 km around a location for each place around that location such markers would appear. Giving a nice overview I believe.

They have it already on warmshowers, I miss this feature on BeWelcome. Of course i didnt put my place, but the meeting point (metro).

When we add this feature we should also write "point where you would like to meet your guests".

A I posted in this thread not revealing your location will put pressure on you maybe more so in rural areas but I don't like that.

The unanswered question still is: What do we want to solve?

This is my idea to solve the information hiding problem. If you search you get the overall results for the area (based on your search parameters of course) either on the map or as text below the search results:

Why would putting a pin to Edinburgh help anyone? People who want to stay in Edinburgh would be annoyed to realized that they have results from places nearby.

Instead the proposed search results (login to alpha to see it) show all places in the vicinity of a city where there are members. This advertises staying in rural areas as well as the city.

Additionally I don't think that this is something we should decide with a Trac ticket.

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
