Update location names

Description (last modified by sitatara)

The names for locations are not up-to-date: Someone wrote to the support about the wrong name for a region in Pakistan. We have listed a province called "North West Frontier Province" with the capital Peshawar but the actual name of that province is "Khyber Pakhtunkhwa". On the correct name is listed: but we seem to be using an old version (the province was called "North West Frontier Province" until 2010).

Another wrong entry: "You should also be aware that there is no longer country such as Netherland Antilles. It is in your list. There is a new country called Curacao but it is not in your list." (from a support ticket)

Actually, you can choose Curacao as a location for your profile but in the "Browse countries" list it's not listed and instead we have "Netherlands Antilles" there.

The following query fixes the Province the other entries should go to other tickets:

UPDATE `geonames_cache` SET `name`='Khyber Pakhtunkhwa' WHERE geonameid = 1168873

  • Status changed from new to to_alpha

please only report one issue per ticket. this makes assigning, discussion, research, solving, testing much easier.

i fixed khyber pakhtunkhwa and cyprus. queries run:

myqsl> UPDATE geonames_cache SET name = 'Khyber Pakhtunkhwa' WHERE geonameid = 1168873;
mysql> UPDATE geonames_countries SET continent = 'EU' WHERE iso_alpha2 = 'CY';

for netherlands antilles it is a bit more complicated:

please create a new ticket for this with suggestions on how to solve this. maybe manually relocate members there if we have any.

You guys open a Pandora box with your manually fixing. Didn't we say before a while: "geonames as it is"?

comment:9 Changed 6 years ago by shevek

The point being here is that geonames has it and we don't.
