Offer privacy settings for gallery

Description (last modified by sitatara)

Currently all pictures uploaded in one's gallery are automatically part of the general BeWelcome gallery. This is neither obvious for the users nor is this what everyone feels comfortable with.

From a support ticket: "As long as all pictures automatically go public in the BeWelcome gallery, we won't upload any although we think that photos are the easiest way to show potential hosts/ guests that we're into hiking, not partying, and into parlour games, not drinking games. [...] we're not happy to see our photos posted to tens of thousands of strangers without our explicit consent."

Suggestions:

  1. Add a line of explanation to the gallery page that all pictures uploaded there are also visible in the BeWelcome gallery: http://www.bewelcome.org/gallery/ (and thus visible to all members even if they do not visit your profile) and that if the profile is a public profile all pictures are visible to non-members too.
  2. Let members decide (either as a general setting or on a picture by picture basis) if they would like their pictures to be visible on their profile only or if they should be part of the BeWelcome gallery.

My suggestion: Let's remove this aggregation. We simple should move the whole "gallery" app into the profile. Privacy will be managed via pulic/nonpublic profiles.

I think that the general BeWelcome gallery as an additional feature has it's advantages. It can be a nice way to browse profiles. I would not like to see it removed.

There are two discussions about this in the forum & feature requests group: http://www.bewelcome.org/forums/s7848-I_propose_to_remove_the_central_photo_gallery http://www.bewelcome.org/groups/571/forum/s7555-The_gallery_is_not_a_community_thing

People who posted in these threads agree unanimously that pictures should only be displayed in the community gallery if the member agrees.

Some are for removing the gallery completely. All seem to agree on an opt-in solution.

The following privacy settings were suggested:

  • visible only for members on your profile
  • visible only for members on your profile and in the community gallery (current standard for non-public profiles)
  • visible publicly on your profile and in the global gallery (current standard for public profiles)

There could be a general privacy setting but it should be complemented by a setting on granular level (for a single photo or a batch of photos). So, a member can choose a standard setting but at upload she can decide to change that to another visibility for those pictures or she can edit photos individually to make them more/less visible.

It's not clear what to do with existing photos. If all are set to private, this would kill the feature completely. Also, we shouldn't assume that everyone wasn't aware of the community gallery. People might be annoyed by a change behind their backs. Possible solution:

Leave setting for existing photos (visible in community gallery) but give members the option to change this with one click (and inform them about this). If we offer a general setting in the preferences we could add a check box to apply this setting to all existing own photos.

As of #2147 the complete gallery has been removed, leaving this one unrelevant.
