Lost Username

Description

We receive a lot of tickets in the OTRS from people who have lost their username, and don’t know how to get it back. Therefore the support team thinks the procedure of how to get the username back should really be explicit on the website, and we suggest to :

  • change the “lost username” e-mail sent from http://www.bewelcome.org/resetpassword/, adding an explicit line : “your username is : XXX”
  • change the reset password page, explaining that the members can get a new password and recover their username too
  • change the "Login" box on the main page with "Don't remember your password and/or your username? Get it back!" instead of "Don't remember your password? Get a new one!"

This would avoid a great number of unsuccessful logging in!

As far as I see the username is already passed to the call for generating the e-mail message, so it should be easy for the translators to include it in their translations. I suppose it is not included at the moment for security reasons. If the support reasons are judged to be more pressing than the security reasons, then this fix could be done by the translators alone and requires no developer intervention. In this case I would personally think the support concerns are more pressing. Still maybe in the message we could emphasize the importance of immediately changing the new password to something more secure.

The variables that the translators can use seem to be at the moment the new password (variable 1) and the username (variable 2). After the message is translated the same translator can add the corresponding changes to the relevant words on the BeWelcome site.

@Zorrolepunk: I just checked the translations and all except Czech used the username in the reset password message. I added it to the Czech wordcode, so I hope that covers all username issues.

Based on the info by lantti it would also be easy to add an explicit line for the message. I guess the rest is better covered by the forum thread you started.

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
