Enhancements of words module

Reported by: lemon-head Owned by: lemon-head
Priority: major Milestone: 0.1.2.1
Component: BW General Keywords: words, lang, words.lib.php, translation, database
Cc: midsch

Description

Affects the words.lib.php, and related files.

Waiting for commit:

  1. word link formatting should happen through css files.
  2. translation links for obsolete words (where the translated version is older than the english version)
  3. if there is no translation available, try english, or show the plain word keycode - this is better than nothing!
  4. it is uslally better to have the entire word clickable for translation. For some cases, however, a separate link is better. In such cases, this link should be small, with a caption saying "TR" or the language.
  5. restructuring: avoid redundancy of code, and long function parameter lists! -> can be achieved with a "class Word", that encapsulates all the information from the DB lookups

From previous tickets:

  1. translation links should be avoided, when they would result in broken html (for instance, in image titles or other html tag attributes). However, translators still want sth to click on, to edit the translation! (#259)
  2. a special edit mode, where all words on the page get translation links. (#263)

Future enhancements

  1. translation quality: translators or others should be able to mark translations as awkward or debatable. This would need a new mysql table column.
  2. language queue: let users choose more than one language. If a translation is not found in the primary language, try the secondary, etc. In the end, try english, or display the plain word keycode (better than nothing).
  3. word usage statistics and cache mechanism. This would need a new mysql table.

Another one that's "waiting for commit":

  • translation functions that take a language as an argument. This is needed in some cases, where the text is not meant for the viewer of a page, but for someone else.. The job was previously done by the wwinlang(..) function in lang.php.

Please test, and evtl do some code review!

comment:3 Changed 9 years ago by lemon-head

  • follow_up changed from review code to test on alpha
  • Milestone set to 0.1.2.1 release with MOD_words + MOD_layoutbits

This ticket is to abstract to mark it "fixed" or whatsoever. I propose to let it out of 0.1.2.1 and just consider it fixed when the release is done.

  • Cc midsch added

If it can't be tested, it must be set from "test on alpha" to release. Any arguments against it?

comment:6 Changed 9 years ago by philipp
