#640 closed improve feature (fixed)

Further simplify the startpage + tour

Reported by: micha Owned by: micha
Priority: major Milestone: 0.6-long
Component: BW Layout Keywords: startpage layout tour
Cc: midsch

The startpage can still be optimized. We should further reduce the amount of text and maybe move the login-widget to another spot.

comment:3 Changed 11 years ago by philipp

  • I like to have less text on the start page (and we should probably simply ignore that this can be bad for google ranking).
  • I would really like to have the login fields on the start page. I don't want to do an extra click (and many people will forget the url for the dedicated startpage)
  • We should probably go back to revolving slogans, always the same one is a bit boring
  • I am not really satisfied with the picture set we have right now. Several people I talked to could not match the pictures to what BW is about.
  • The footer does not at all fit to the new design
  • I liked the idea of showing some activity on the public start page so maybe replace the third section taken from the tour by:
    • bringing back the listing of some public profiles
    • some recent forum post from a member with public profile
    • ...

comment:4 Changed 11 years ago by crumbking

  • miss the personal touch... can you integrate the random public user profile pictures again?
  • remove all -tour- links on all tour pages -> these double headlines are unnecessary
  • and could you integrate a step 7 "sign up now" ->In the tour menu
  • remove the grey "signup" link -> the orange button is enough
  • move "members online" into the orange teaser (next to find people)
  • use the free space and replace the "login link" with username<form> password<form> for a more easy login

  • ohh and please this is the most important/ugliest one as it is already on production:

I can only agree with all the points from Philipp and Manuel. I would like to add that i don't really like the fading/sliding javascriipt effects. I would rather show a static "picture of the week (month)" that members can send to us.

comment:7 Changed 11 years ago by micha

Thanks for the feedback, guys. Let me "recomment":

  • About personal touch: Would you be fine with replacing the third icon (the maps) underneath the big picture with random user pictures? I would like to stick to the 3 columns while don't adding more vertical space. Philipp had a similar idea when we looked together at the new startpage.
  • About logins: As you say it clearly here, I will add the login fields again but make them smaller (leave out the texts and unnecessary info). Philipp and me looked for the perfect spot but I guess there is none.
  • About revolving slogans: Ok, fine with me. Please try to activate the text-people for this.
  • About the pictures: Ok, agree with Globetrotter and Philipp on this. Would be good to invite members in the gallery to apply with a picture for the startpage. Maybe we can program something? Until this happens, please just send me better pictures! I will add them to the startpage
  • About members online: We don't have more space in the top menu for this as new links will be added soon (Blogs, trips), so better take it out totally on the startpage, ok? Or maybe put it in the footer?...

Now on the tour:

  • Do we really need another step 7 "sign up now" ? The end of the tour gives you the sign up anyway and the signup link is in the header anyway.
  • 'remove all -tour- links' -> ok, fine with me. What do others say?

new changes in r5630,r5631,r5632

comment:9 Changed 11 years ago by philipp

like it a lot

minor things:

  • make left and right margins of the main area the same (either move the text on the left to align with the orange header or increase the margin on the right to match the one on the left)
  • if possible (I pretty much expect that it will not work) horizontally align the centers of "language" and the bw logo

besides this - lets move it!

comment:10 Changed 11 years ago by globetrotter_tt

I like it too :)

more things:

  • the "login" button is missing ;-)
  • please make the input fields wider. I hate it when i can't see what i type.
  • labels should be always above the input fields. We should think more about accessibility !!!
  • remove "groups" out of the top navi, as it's not interesting so far. Then there's more space for the login section

comment:11 Changed 11 years ago by micha

Ok, guys. With all respect. That's too much.

1) Philipp said they're not that needed. Now I will add them again. But hell - I think at some point we have to acknowledge that there are always trade-offs.. 2) Wider input fields. Ehhm, nope. You have to live with your hate or go to 3) I didn't know that this leads to problems. That's doable. I will change it. 4) I want to add blogs and trips soon. Before we solve our navigation problems I refuse to remove more stuff from the menu. Would you mind, workin on this a little with me, Matthias?

I hope none of these wordings sounds offensive. I didn't mean so - it just takes sooo much time..

comment:13 Changed 11 years ago by crumbking

Great I like it! just a minor thing: maybe there is now enough space in the new version for the "members online" next to the language drop down? I mean it's not a problem to remove it just thought if there is space we could leave it. (shows some activity)

Let's move it! :)

reminder for others:

  • 'remove all -tour- links' -> What do others say?

Ohh since the button is there the login layout is broken!

comment:14 follow-up: Changed 11 years ago by globetrotter_tt

I am sorry for sounding to harsh and demanding in my last post. I shouldn't write when i have stress at work. You are doing a great job and it's not really motivating for the one who does the work when everybody is nagging.

What i don't understand: Why is a submit button for the login-form not needed ? I think there should be always a submit button for a form, or not ?

Yes, a good and easy navigation is an important thing, but by far not that easy to realize. I would like to help you with it (without nagging too much ;) )

update in r5664. Just waiting for some CSS-tuning by Matthias and a solution for the "wrong-password"-problem. I guess after that it can go up to alpha/production.

comment:17 Changed 11 years ago by globetrotter_tt

first changes in r5666.

What do you mean exactly with "wrong-password"-problem ?

comment:18 Changed 11 years ago by globetrotter_tt

another very small fix in r5667

comment:19 Changed 11 years ago by midsch

  • Cc midsch added

(all tests with newest iceweasel on a siduxbox):

good stuff:

  • all links work
  • scaling with conrol and +/- works well
  • the layout is simple and more inviting
  • java-script (always blocked by my browser first) is only necessary for the language switcher, but there are links in the footer
  • while I was typing this one by one the html-bugs were squeezed by globetrotter_tt

real bad:

  • the loginfields are NOT clickable, i can only reach them with tab (that is good btw)

to be changed:

  • do something about the language names (it's better than the flags), but with all the languages we already have it looks weird
  • membersonline, login, signup are on one line, the languageswitcher isn't
  • sorry, but the logo and the login-fields look like "just put somewhere on the page"; idea: ditch the grey signup- and login-buttons and put the loginfields at their position.

comment:20 Changed 11 years ago by midsch

Maybe I should add: for the effect in the main title and the slide show java-script is needed as well (no one "needs" it).

  • the slideshow: i also love the idea of "pic of the month", but while this is probably trivial in a technical way, we need a team for it first, maybe announcing it in BW? if there is a team that provides pics from users, we could replace the slideshow.

comment:21 Changed 11 years ago by philipp

on ff 2:

  • the title is now a two liner, with JS enabled "Real" pops up a second later and moves the intro text down - looks really weird.
  • login fields are clickable in ff2
  • left and right side are completely differently aligned (or not aligned at all).
    • reference, orange bar.
    • text in the orange bar has different right and left margin and is different to any other element of the page
    • left: the members have left margin, texts small left margin, footer has two different left marigns.
    • right: logo has big right margin (but smaller than members on the left), picture has negative right margin

comment:22 Changed 11 years ago by micha

Actually I stopped working on this because I lost a bit overview with the changes, Matthias did. I'm happy he's on it but because of the tab-width changes the changeset looks somewhat messy.

Other stuff:

  • A 50/50 layout for the teaser was never intended. Instead the "golden cut" should be realized.
  • I think we can make a difference between texts and images when it comes to "padding/margin". The distance to the right and left can be "none" for images and still about 30px for texts. That looks better in my opinion. If you don't like it, better give it both a padding/margin.

I will see if I find more time for this. Would be great if someone else could try to finish it. It's not that big of a deal, is it?

comment:23 Changed 11 years ago by micha

removed the login-fields again. Maybe they can go into the footer? It looks so much cleaner without them on top. I also made the whole page a bit wider and cleaned up CSS. Better?

comment:24 Changed 11 years ago by philipp

as you know I disagree with removing the login fields. ;)

When putting them to the footer (which would be very unusual) they must still have the focus!

do we really need the signup link and search field in the header of the public start page?

thanks for adjusting the margins ;)

New startpage proposal. Login fields, welcoming new members, introduction of the website, new stuf

comment:25 Changed 10 years ago by globetrotter_tt

I like the new startpage with the video. Hopefully we receive a bunch of great clips. The only thing that i a missing now is the link to the tour.

comment:26 Changed 10 years ago by micha

link readded.

@feuerdaemon: I'm sorry I kind of ignored your proposal. I didn't understand though, why we should show last forum posts on our startpage. Is it all only about activity? Recently I thought, maybe it would be good to only show an introductory text and the video and that's it.. (plus login fields etc.)

comment:27 Changed 10 years ago by globetrotter_tt

If somebody writes the text for IndexPageWord_MembersText the startpage is finally ready, and i think we can close this ticket.
