banner promotion system - nice to get started task

Description

To push off the word by mouth promotion of BW a bit Thomas proposal for the outreach campaign included a referrer contest similar to the one you might know from the "get firefox" campaign. It should basically allow members to put links and banners referring to BW on their websites/blogs/forum posts/mail signature/... and to have a ranking to show which BW member draws the biggest number of hits to the BW page.

Interestingly there is no ready to go solution for this available but it would be very easy to integrate into the BW-rox. Indeed this task could be ideal to get into coding as you would create 2 simple pages and deal with simple database connection (not affecting existing data structure). It is nothing that is required but could be very beneficial to have. So if somebody feels like getting started with this rather than with some bug fixing or forum tweaking to include it into the next release it would definitely be great.

One rough draft how this could be implemented easily:

provide link/banner

create a static page (in /build/rox ask Felix for detailed howto) that contains translatable text (in a $word variable, as Jean-Yves or Felix how this works) as explanation, some banners/logos and links that can be used to promote BW and the corresponding html code for copy paste.

The html code should look similar to (with "username" replaced by the one of the logged in user):

<!-- BeWelcome banner -->
<a href="http://www.bewelcome.org/?campaign=oct07&name=username" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.bewelcome.org/banner1.gif" alt="BeWelcome!" width="xxx" height="xxx" border="0" /></a>
<!-- End BeWelcome Banner -->

the database:

  • create DB table with columns: id, campaign
  • create DB table with columns: id, usernameid, campaignid, counttotal, countweek, countday

tracking:

on www.bewelcome.org/ (which is also generated by /build/rox)

  • get client IP
  • get values of referring link (campaign,username)
  • check if IP == the IP used by username for login before, if so, discard hit (as it is most likely a hit by the user himself, ask JY if you don't find the logged IP)
  • increase count for username by 1

statistics:

create a second static page in build/rox and display all usernames sorted descending by number of hits in 3 separate lists for day/week/total

automation:

  • set countday to 0 every night at 0:00 UTC
  • set countweek to 0 every Monday at 0:00 UTC
